THEY WILL NOT SEEK AFTER GOD
Scripture Reading: Romans 1:16-25
Text: Psalm 10:4
I. Atheism
• “a” (no) “theism” (belief in God)
• Psalm 14:1
• Only a fool would think that the complexities of our world (plant, animal kingdoms, etc.) came about without an intelligent designer and creator
• Hundreds of thousands of things are being made today in factories all over the world. Things much less complex than 5 kingdoms of our world. And yet ALL of these things have men or women who have designed and made them.
• Nothing you buy on a Wal-Mart shelf designed and made itself.
(Rom 1:22) Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
II. Agnosticism
• “a” (not) “gnosko” (I know)
• We cannot know for sure if God does or does not exist
• Latin equivalent is ignores or ignoramus (grand jury’s decision when there was not enough evidence)
• Psalm 19:1; Romans 1:19-20
• Someone has pointed out that the agnostic cannot find God for the same reason a thief cannot find a policeman - - - because he is running away!
III. Deism
• God exists, but not as a personal God (deadbeat dad)
• God created the world perfect and therefore has no need to involve himself anymore in its affairs.
• If this is the case, you may as well throw out the entire volume of the Scriptures because the Bible is a book telling us all about God’s interaction with man.
• If Deism is true – forget praying – because God really doesn’t care.
• In the late 20th century Deism expressed itself with the motto – “God Is Dead”
(2Co 6:18) And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
IV. Dualism
• There is Good Force and an Evil Force both equal in power
• 1 John 4:3-4; Rev. 20:2, 7-10
• Yin {shady} & Yang {sunny}
• Has many similarities to Christianity but has no “personal living God”
(Lev 26:12) And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.
(Rev 21:7) He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
V. Pantheism
• God is nature and nature is God
• Therefore a tree, a rock, a waterfall, an animal, even man is God
• If these are God (or part of God) then they are to be worshipped.
• Romans 1:25
• Psalm 135:15-18
(Psa 19:1) The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork.
(Hab 2:18) What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?
(Hab 2:19) Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
• Paul Carus (brought Buddhism to America) says that he is “an atheist who loves God”
• Many Unitarian Universalism Churches (1 in Morgantown) are pantheist. Some are Buddhist, Atheist, Agnostic, some consider themselves Christian, and most claim to be humanist.
VI. Polytheism
• “poly” (many) “theism” (belief in God)
• Acts 17:22-23
(1Ti 2:5) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
(Isa 44:6) Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
(Joh 17:3) And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
• 2,850 gods
• Each one has his/her specialty – none is ALL POWERFUL
(Mat 28:18) And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
(Mat 19:26) But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
