HIS NAME
Matthew 1:18-25

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21)

Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. (Matthew 1:23) 

· One name describes HIS OFFICE (what was he to do?)
· One name describes HIS NATURE (who was he?)


I - HIS NAME - JESUS 
· common Jewish name given in memory of Joshua (same name) 
· Joshua led Israel out of bondage into Promise Land
· Jesus leads sinners out of bondage into victorious Christian living
· JESUS = God is Salvation
· Rightfully named because - "he shall save his people from their sins."
· This JESUS would do by saving them . . . 
· From the GUILT of sin - Romans 5:8-9a. (justified)
· From the POWER of sin - Romans 8:1-2, 12-14
· From the CONSEQUENCE of sin - Romans 5:9 & 1Thess. 1:9-10
· From the PRESENCE of sin - Rev. 7:13-17
· So, the name of JESUS should be a very encouraging name to heavy-laden sinners! 
· A very sweet and precious name to believers!


II - HIS NAME - EMMANUEL 
· Prophecy is given in Isaiah 7:14
· IMMANUEL = God is with us
· Literally . . . Jesus was, and is GOD
· John 8:56-58; Col. 2:9; 1Tim. 3:16
