Scribe = the original copier… the original secretary (dictation / stenographer).
Scribes were secular as well as sacred (Matt. 23:34)
The scribe in our text is a sacred scribe.
He is also a STUDENT and a TEACHER (this is the lesson).
1) The Teacher Must First Be A Student!
a. As the lawyer must study law and a doctor must study medicine… So the Christian teacher must study the Scriptures!2) The Teacher Must Bring Forth NEW Treasure!
b. They must KEEP learning
c. It is strange that anyone would think that they are fit to teach others the greatest truths w/o first devoting great time to learning those truths themselves!
d. Pro. 22:17, Ecc. 12:9-10, Col. 3:16
a. The Bible teacher should not present the same stuff year after year (same sermon – different title).3) The Teacher Must Not Neglect OLD Treasure!
b. Even I get tired of McDonalds!
c. And yet, he is not to invent notions of his own and try to pass them off as Divine revelation!
d. The well that he draws from is to be the Holy Scriptures… How then, you ask, can he find anything new?
i. Old & New Testaments (law & grace)
ii. New insight (as we read & grow)
iii. Fresh applications (as the world changes)
iv. By the very nature of the Bible (Ro. 11:33)
a. A truth is still good even if it is an old truth! Truth is eternal. Old, familiar truth is needed as well.
b. “Old Paths” (Jer. 6:16)
c. “The Cross of Calvary” is an old, familiar truth, but it is still wonderful to hear.
d. There is always a need for the oldi. Those who have never hearde. Like old & new jeans (purpose for both)
ii. Those need reminded
iii. Those who love the old, old story
iv. 2 Tim. 3:16i. old & new dishes
ii. old & new blankets, towels
iii. etc.
